A Parent’s and Physician’s Perspective

Options for Seizure Disorder Treatment in Children

Phoenix Children's Hospital invites you to a special Webinar with Paulette George and Dr. Jeffrey Buchhalter, Chief of the Hospital’s Division of Neurology and Director of the Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Program. This one-hour Webinar describes one family's journey through the violent storms of epilepsy and autism along with various options for treatment of seizure disorders.

Dr. Buchhalter offered priceless advice throughout our family’s journey to help our child. The following is his advice, to you, should you find yourself in a seizure storm.  ---Paulette George

If you have a child or any other loved one suffering from uncontrolled seizures, seek out and find the optimal care with the assistance of your local care providers, if possible.  Frequently, the most comprehensive care for individuals with epilepsy is found in specialized pediatric and adult epilepsy centers.  Sometimes the challenge is just getting there.  --- Jeffrey Buchhalter, MD

Annual Arizona Epilepsy Walk - Phoenix
Phoenix, AZ
6:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
Saturday, April 10, 2010

The Phoenix Epilepsy Walk is the Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona’s largest fundraiser and is held annually at the Phoenix Zoo.  The walk is a pledge-driven, non-competitive, event engaging people affected by epilepsy and their friends and families.

This annual fundraising walk not only raises money to support the programs and services of the Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona, but also serves to increase epilepsy awareness throughout the general population and is a wonderful way to spend the day with your family.

The goal for the 2010 Walk is to raise $125,000 to continue the important and vital work of the Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona.  Teams are the heart of what makes the Epilepsy Walk so successful.  Corporations, families, organizations, and school groups build teams to show their support for the epilepsy community.

The Team Captain’s job is to motivate and encourage others to join your team.  Once the team is in place, the Team Captain then acts as the key liaison between their team and the Foundation.  Click here for the Team Captain Kit.

Managing Students with Seizures

School Nurses Continuing Education Training

This curriculum, accredited by the National Association of School Nurses, is offered to school nurses by Neurological Nurses explaining aspects of epilepsy, seizure types, diagnosis, treatment, and first aid for the student having a seizure.

This Train-the-Trainer program gives the school nurse the knowledge and the material to train their teachers and staff about what to look for when a child has one of the many forms of seizures and what to do when they occur.  Often times it is the teacher, and not the parent, who first notices the child is having seizures.

We invite all school nurses from Phoenix and surrounding areas, to participate in this 3 ½ hour program. The program is given by a neurological nurse, a school nurse and a volunteer from the Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona.  Each participant will receive 3.2 CEUs from NASN, a Managing Student with Seizures Kit that includes all the material and DVD needed to conduct epilepsy education classes, as well as the knowledge to accurately provide much needed epilepsy information to the teachers and staff at your school.

The National Association of School Nurses, is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
