I've had four neurologists in 10 years. 2 moved away. When i was considering surgery we went to one in the city, NYC that is. My current neurologist rocks! He is so p*****ionate about epilepsy. Anyway I shout out to Dr. Frank Gilliam. He is currently working at Weill Cornell Medical Center. Anyone else want to shout out to there neurologist?

I had one in Phoenix who put me on TONS of Neurontin, and did lots of tests.
He sent me to an epileptologist at Barrow Neurological Institute. That one counts as my second neuro. He was abrupt, but seemed good. He made me face that it was really epilepsy.
I moved back to Northern Idaho, and wasn't in treatment because I got sick of the pills, the tests, and no real solution. I asked my GP to refer me to a neuro because I couldn't deal with the seizures anymore. He sent me to my third neuro who read what the GP sent (that I had a personality disorder. I don't.) ... told me I only had migraines, and to keep taking my 300mg of Neurontin a day if I thought it was working.
Of course, it wasn't.
I ditched that GP for being both a jerk and an idiot about neurological stuff, and went to another. She sent me to my current neuro, Dr. Timothy Powell at Rockwood Clinic in Spokane, WA. He ROCKS. Absolutely the best I've met. Not that I've met a lot. :D
Even though I'm reaching that point where I'm sick of the drugs and no good resolution, I'm sticking to it this time. I know if it can be solved, this man can help accomplish it.

I don't know if you can count Dr whats-his-face as my doctor when he slapped the word epilepsy on my chart and handed me off to the Dr whats-his-face #2 without a prescription. I was sent to pediatric neurologist Dr Thompson in Salt Lake after a number of months, who p*****ed me on to an epileptologist after my surgery failed. He wasn't a bad man; tried hard and put up with a lot. My current doctor is absolutely wonderful to me.

My daughter had 6 different neurologists in 38 years. The last on was Dr. Carl Bazil at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NY. He is fantastic, comp*****ionate and smart. Anyone in NY anyone of the Neuros. a Columbia would be fantastic.

I haven't had a neuro but my daughter has had 2 plus a epi & a neurosurgeon. There are a lot of parents & caregivers that post here in the lounge.

We always tell people with kids to see Dr. Barbara Olsen here in Nashville or in Atlanta Dr. Robert Flamini is a real lifesaver!

I was with my first neuro for almost 13 years from the time I was first (re)diagnosed in 1996. He was ok except for being so insistent about not letting my have my driver's license back.

My E is pretty well-controlled so I'm a pretty run-of-the-mill case and when I went to see him this past December, I was getting ready to tell him I was going to drop him and just have my GP monitor my E. The I found out that my old neuro moved to Texas and they *****igned me to another doctor in the practice.

I don't know why, but I really didn't like this guy. I think it's mostly because when I think of the term "breakthrough" seizure, to me it means a seizure that you have when you drug level is in the proper therapeutic range....meaning that the drug isn't working the way it should. To me, if I were to stop taking my medicine and my level dropped as would be expected, resulting in a seizure....to me, that's not a "breakthrough" seizure. There was not enough drug for the seizure to "break through". To me.....I call that a "No Sh**, Sherlock," seizure.

He also wanted to change my dosage of phenytoin because I take different amounts on alternating days. I had to tell him 3 times that I was happy with how it worked, so I didn't want to play with it.

This man did not make a good first impression, so I am dropping him and going to start seeing my GP to treat my seizures. If something serious comes up, my GP will know which neuro to consult.

So....back to the original question....I had TWO neuros.

I started out with the family dr. at age 3. Then I went to a team of neuros at St. Louis Children's (Barnes) Hospital. When I turned 18, I went to an adult neuro at Barnes (mistake). So I found a neuro whose office was just a mile from my house in Belleville, IL (bigger mistake). Then a lady from work gave me an article on an epi from St. Louis U Hospital and that was a dream come true.

This man and his wife worked together and seemed to care about me more than the others combined. I saw him for 10 years then I had to convince him I wasn't satisfied with my seizure control and when I talked him into letting me have the surgery, I met a very good, supportive surgeon.

This led to 8+ years seizure-free, 2 1/2 years off meds, a real second chance at life. It's like serving a 40-year sentence and all of a sudden you receive a pardon.
