Our daughter Amy has been wanting a dog of her own for some time, but I wasn't sure how it would work out because our other dog Tom seemed to have trouble socializing with fellow dogs. I gave in though yesterday and we adopted our newest addition to the family, Porthos. (Like the Musketeer, and like the Beagle from one of the Star Trek series.)
We're a sucker for hard-luck cases. Tom had been abused by his last owner, and so had Porthos, but worse. He's a beagle-mix that had been purposefully thrown out of a moving truck onto the highway. Someone saw it, picked him up, and brought him to the local animal shelter. His left front leg had been broken either during the truck incident or earlier. Unfortunately Porthos's leg couldn't be saved, so he only has three legs. It didn't look like he had much chance of being adopted. Fortunately there is a pair of ladies who stay in contact with the animal shelter, and they specifically adopt injured dogs if no one else has by the scheduled kill date. They take it upon themselves to pay for the veterinary care for the dog's recovery, then offer the dog up for adoption from their home. It was sad to see the dogs they had that had been shot, beaten, or were also missing a limb, yet it was simultaneously uplifting to know that there are people out there like these ladies who voluntarily take up such a difficult but loving task. Porthos is adapting well to life with three limbs, and he seems to be adjusting well to our home as well. Best of all Tom is adjusting well too. After a couple of warning growls as he made it known which feeding bowl was his, he seems to enjoy having a friend. After only 24 hours they're already comfortable enough to nap curled up side-by-side. Love it! ------------------------- Reality. Wow....that's wonderful Brian. That's the kind of new I needed to hear today.
I'm glad Tom and Porthos are getting along so well. Any idea how old Porthos is? And the big question......when do we get to see pictures??? :) ------------------------- "My male roommate and I mixed up our nicotine and testosterone patches. He got cranky and hungry.
