It's a given: Everyday trials and tribulations get us all worked up and a lot of us have such a tensed up mind that it's not even funny.
Last Monday, when I walked out to catch the bus to go home, my mind was so racked and mushy from a final exam. But when I listened to the purring of a diesel engine, my mind really relaxed and I felt I could actually get through the hour long bus ride home.

To me, nothing is more relaxing than listening to a diesel engine iding at 500 RPM.
What kind of sounds soothe your mind?

The raindrops hitting a pound with the crickets and frogs talking to each other. Mother nature in general the mocking bird outside my window now.

Yeah, same here; insects, frogs, coyotes, wind.

I used to have a breeding colony of Tokay geckos (along with nearly a hundred other reptiles and amphibians), and the "barking" noises they make at night I found very relaxing.

Rain on any surface; leaves, tent, roof, street.

Trains, too.

Oh yeah.....When I was a kid my bedroom was in the attic and I could hear the rain right on the roof of the house.....nicest sound to fall asleep to.

I also love the sound of thunderstorms. I used to have a CD of thunderstorms and other nature sounds that I would play at night to help me relax.

Now....when I sit on the sofa with my bf, under the guise of watching a movie, I end up putting my head on his shoulder, and the sound of his heartbeat and breathing puts me to sleep in no time. He just rolls his eyes and jokes that I have never seen the last half of any movie we've watched together......

I too love the rain. Oh I can fall asleep when I hear it. :) There is one more....when I am near water, just the smell and the water lapping against the shore makes me so calm, I am at ease. There isn't anything that can bother me. I can also look out at a fresh snow fall and smell the fresh snow and the cold air and I am as calm as can be. I also love the smell of Autumn. The smell of leaves that have raked and just that smell of that time of year, there's nothing like it. Come to think of it, I love the smell of fresh cut lawn also. I guess anything that's outside, makes feel calm. Being inside makes me like a prisoner.

The sounds of the ocean...whether it be the waves, or the gulls, or the diesel engine from a boat...i love the sound of boats in the harbor...even better, I love the sounds a boat makes when you're on it. Heaven right there. <3

I agree Brad. It's been nearly a year since I last heard that sound, but now that you mention it, there's a point where I hear something that resembles a scuba regulator on a bus: listening to the air cycle from the air tanks to the brakes. (The brakes are air-powered on a bus.) I heard that on a Saturday afternoon.

I love the sounds of the beach. Day or night. The sound of the waves makes me very relaxed. Before I went to university I was a cook at a restaurant in Port Stanley Ontario. I used to work until 2 or 3 in the morning and had to roll back in at 9am. Instead of driving the 20 minutes home I would take a couple of blankets and sleep on the beach under the stars. The sound of the waves on the beach put me to sleep very quickly.
