This is a procedure in which they induce a person into a seizure to make them feel better, hmmmm.

It kinda trips me out that they have been doing this for over 70 years now and evidently it helps a lot of people with things like depression and other neurological disorders.

Most here are doing everything within their capabilities to make sure this dosen't happen, yet many here are dealing with depression.

I don't really know what I'm trying to say here just a procedure I thought kinda weird, any comments any one know or every have this done, and if so does it really help?

Here is a link or two with some more info about this

One member of my immediate family that suffers from depression had ECT after all other forms of treatment failed. ECT is usually recommended only when all other options have been tried. Before they administer the shock they use muscle relaxants and anesthesia so there are none of the physical effects of a seizure. Since it is induced electrically there is also no risk from it happening at a bad time. This is not the same as shock therapy from the 30's you sometimes see in movies.

She said it helped but eventually stopped because of the side effects. In particular the memory loss was really severe in her case. Quite often the beneficial effect is permanent and does not require repeated treatments. We were hoping this would be the case but the 6 initial treatments were not successful and she ended up undergoing weekly treatments for nearly 2 years.

The side effects of ECT are not pleasant but depression can be much worse. Mental illness has a stigma attached to it and is not taken seriously by some people. In this case I think it would have been fatal if not treated. I view ECT kind of like AEDs. The side effects can be severe but doing nothing is usually worse. Some of the anti depressant drugs also have side effects that are nearly as bad as those from ECT

Im just kinda wondering about everything and well the world is really crazy sometimes. All day long on the tv and even radio to are advertisements about some kinda drug for just about everything. Now all of these have side effects some relevant to others some not and the severity of them range from hardly noticeable to dropping over with a bad case of instant death.

Many of the AED's are known for causing depression and I just don't get it? In my head I'm fairly happy 90% of the time, and can't really remember being depressed much but what I can remember it comes in really bad low's I was diagnosed with Manic Depression and I just don't think I am. Now here is the catch, if I'm having seizures and they are actually making me happy afterward but I cant remember it, how will I ever know?

I am stoping here and not editing this before I copy and paste it sorry if its crazy sounding but trying to keep up is hard to do at times.

Howdy Doug and thanks for the input on this I'm trying to grasp it all again and well its not working out to well fer me but I'm trying to find relationships between the madness even if it is futile.

If the side efect is memory loss, I'll p*****. I have lost enough memories already. Once I cleaed my head, I realized that I have fewer memories than most people do. Between the seizures, the medicatioin and banging my head so many times over my life... I would rather keep my memory intact. I hear they are doing something simlar to get kids over peanut allergies. They give them peanut flour that amounts to about 1/1000 of a peanut everyday. The dosage is increased gradually over a long period of time until they are getting a whole peanut worth of the peanut flour. By the time they get there, they are more tolerannt or cured.
