Hello,
I've been on lamictal for a few months now and just this month I have had some irregular period issues. It seems like I am going to start my period and I do, very lightly, but only for one or three days. Then about two weeks later the same thing happened. Has anyone else ever had this happen, is it normal and how can you stop it?
Thanks for any input you can give.

I recently had my first seizure in almost 6 years. Can anyone tell me what the laws regarding seizures and driving in MN are? Are there any exceptions to the 6 month rule such as driving just for work? Let me know. I am considering not telling my doc about my seizure just so I don't lose my license...

I supposedly had a seizure three years ago. My husband was present during the "seizure incident" and indicated that I collapsed to the floor but was was completely immobile (i.e., no flailing or other body movement). I decided to go to the "best" Boston-area neurology medical facility for treatment -- first I was treated at Brigham's and Williams Hospital and then had all my follow-up care at M*****achusetts General Hospital. I was diagnosed as having had one seizure based on an abnormal EEG and MRI.

I have never had another seizure since then and, recently, started seeing a different neurologist at Lahey Clinic. The doctor reviewed all the records, EEG's and MRI's from B&W and M***** General and she said that she saw no indications whatsoever of any seizure activity. She redid the EEG's and MRI's and still found no abnormalities. The new doctor has now told me that I can come off the Keppra as my chance of having a seizure is 30%. I am ecstatic about this and can't wait but am wondering about how I could have been misdiagnosed or is my current doctor wrong. Has this happened to anyone else? Who to believe?

Can the menopause start earlier due to the meds and brain activity? I started having hot flushes three years ago, I thought the room was hot and it was hot in that office. I had so many problems and after a huge, huge generalize seizure (I rather die than have another like that), I decided to have the RTL surgery. My menstrual periods stoped, after the surgery the periods returned. The surgery was in 2006, I was 43 years old, last year I had heavy periods and since April nothing.

Should I go take an aditional vitamine D supplement?

I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism. But let me start at the beginning....I had seizures beginning at age 14. Had MRI's, cat scans, all pointed to idiopathic epilepsy as all my results looked normal. I was on dylantin at first then since that made me too sleepy they switched me to 60 mg of Phenobarb- 2x a day and .5 klonopin once a day. I have been on that cocktail for over 15 years as I am turning 30 in 2 weeks.

I have been seizure free for 5+ years now. I do want to get weened off of the Pheno/Klonopin mix but am moving cross country for grad school and will wait till I am settled..

So now the recent diagnosis of being hypothyroid. I looked up Pheno's affect on the thyroid and it can lower thyroid hormone. My GP called in a script of Synthroid in to the pharmacy but that is one extra med I do not want to be on. I am sure all of you can relate! I have been taking Vit D supplements as my levels are low etc

Just curious if any other people are on Pheno or any AED and were diagnosed as hypothyroid

Thanks!

I've read all of your posts, including the one from our gentleman. CLEARLY there is a connection between seizures and hormones. Even hormones in men can cause seizures. I have been seizure free since the last one in 10/08, however, have had quite a few startle responses. I think a startle response is a little seizure??? They scare me as I am semi-conscious -- just as I am drifting off the sleep. They still leave me a little with that "sur-real" feeling and kind of a hang-over feeling the next day. And, makes my heart race and am wide awake for awhile after. I do some meditation to calm down and that helps me sleep. I do drink soy, at least every day and will look into that connection. I am going to next try a hormone doctor. Thanks all for your comments!

Hi - This may be a little long, but I wanted some advice on this situation.

I do not have epilepsy but my mother does. She was on Carbitral & Pheno-barb and was seizure free for 15 years. Then her new neurologist diagnosed her with sleep apnea and claimed she was having mini-seizures throughout the night. He took her off the Carbitral and started her on Keppra. She had really bad side effects from the Keppra so he switched her to Lamictal. Turns out the new neuro misread the EEG and changed her meds for nothing (and she had a seizure during this time). She then switched to a different doctor and he suggested she stay on the Lamictal because it was a better drug than Carbitral. She was on 500 mg of Lamictal and not feeling all that great (couldn't concentrate, hand tremors....but no seizures). Recently her neuro said her dosage was too high and he took her down 25mg and next week she needs to go down 25 mg more, to a final level of 450 mg. The problem is she is now extremely dizzy. My question is, will the dizziness stop, what does it mean (too much or too little dose)? My mom wants to tell her neuro to put her back on the Carbitral b/c it worked for her for 15 years.

What are your opinions/comments on this?
