BRAND NEW eCommunities! READ ME!

Attention all eCommunities members:

Because of all the requests from so many eCommunities members - and because the Epilepsy Foundation eCommunities are so very important to so very many people, we here at the Foundation have searched high and low for a new system that might give all our eCommunities constituents the ability to once again share photos and links - and, for the first time ever, also share videos, blogs and other material!

You might have heard something about the change to the new and improved system over the past several months, because we've been working on it for quite a long time.

The new site (which can be accessed by www.epilepsyfoundation.org/ecommunities, along with several of the other front and side eCommunity links you've used over the past few years), which you must register for (your current eCommunities profile will not move over - we are NOT migrating accounts over), is live now. If you've always wanted to have a new name, now's the chance to change it!

The old site will be available until at least Thursday, 3/26/09. After that, it will become read-only, which means you will be able to copy messages from those forums for a while. Once the old site goes to read-only you will no longer be able to access your private messages (PMs), so you copy any of those you wish to keep as soon as you possibly can.

If you have any questions or concerns about the site, you should (1) ping the EF moderator, (2) contact me, (3) post your question in the Announcements/FAQ forum: http://epilepsyfoundation.ning.com/forum/topics/2217546:Topic:1621. You should check out the FAQ and User Guide as soon as you've created your new account so that you can familiarize yourself with the new system and learn more about all that you'll be able to do with it. By checking these areas first, you'll probably figure out most of your questions for yourself pretty quickly and easily, since a lot of us think the site is pretty intuitive.

Because of the issues we've had in the past about pictures, we're using an approval system for photos and videos with the new forums. What this means is that you can't directly post photos or videos to the site. You'll post them, we'll approve them (unless there is a problem with them), and then they'll go up. We don't know how long this system will continue for, since it depends on whether or not we have any problems with folks trying to post inappropriate material. I know everyone is eager to start posting photos again, and I'm hoping this system will make everyone happier, since your photos and videos should eventually make it up onto the site.

We are very excited about this new site launch, and I'm really hoping this new site will alleviate and solve problems with downtime, log-in errors and other problems. This new site is a full-featured, robust, social networking platform that will allow users to upload messages, photos and videos, as well as keep blogs and do all sorts of other nifty things.

I hope everyone finds the new eCommunities as fun and exciting as me and the rest of our team here at the Foundation do - now just hop on over to the new area and create your new identity before the online name you really, really want gets taken!

Trouble in the afternoon with spacing out carbs/fats

Okay, I think that where I am having trouble is Jake's eating in the afternoon and spacing out carbs evenly. Jake typically has clusters of absence seizures shortly before lunch and again about 3-5 in the afternoon, which coincidentally is when people who have hypoglycemia frequently have their trouble. I have on occ*****ion tested his blood sugar at these times and he has been a little lower than what he should be. Not crazy low just I think too low for him. I am wondering if he almost needs a little snack every two hours but then I think the blood sugar is jumping the other way. I also feel as others mentioned that he does better in the lower range of ketosis and he very easily gets into the large range. He eats lunch at 11:15 before kindergarten. Takes a snack to school for 1:30 and then gets home about 3:45. Dinner is usally about 5:45. This is sometimes when we see the seizures. I give him a small snack for school : grapes, cheese. Then when he gets home maybe a couple slices of apple with peanut butter. He isn't even hungry at this time and is usually in high ketosis. I think this is part of the problem. Any tips - on how to space this out better >>>>PLEASE!! I am running out of ideas and getting so frustrated.

Aurora's Neuro did mention that we could look into the Ketogenic diet since she has been on 6 meds.

When do you all think that should become an option?

How hard is the diet? What does a daily meal consist of? How does it effect the others in your household, or how does it effect your child who is on the diet, but cannot eat what they want???

Is it tough to stick with?

Do you wean all meds while on the diet? Or do the diet in contrast to meds?

Aurora has taken:

Tegretol (failed... made seizures worse)
Topomax (Serious congnitive side effects)
Keppra (Currently on... has not controlled seizures FULLY)
Depakote (Currently on... has not controlled seizures FULLY)

When they took Aurora off her meds, IT WAS 1000000 TIMES WORSE. She couldnt even function, and finally went into a generalized status seizure! So her being on meds has made a HUGE improvement, even though its not 100%.

Would doing the diet, benefit more than trying another med instead?

Is it as hard as people say?

THANKS everyone...

For many of us, FAGE yogurt is a staple in our meal planning. I grew tired of the expense (and frequent runs to TJs) and decided to make my own. I also realized that Elsa would benefit from the extra probiotic bacteria in the homemade yogurt. I now make it regularly, 1-2 times per week. It's extremely easy and I've found that I can make a heavier fat version too.

Ingredients
1 quart heavy cream
1 quart whole milk
2 pkts Yogourmet Yogurt Starter (or) 1/2 cup Dannon AllNatural Plain Whole Milk Yogurt

Equipment
1 large sauce pan
1 wooden spoon
1 candy or yogurt thermometer, analog or digital
1 Yogurt Maker (optional) or Oven (warm location w/steady temp of 110 degrees)
Colander or Strainer
Cheesecloth (reusable - available at supermarkets)

Instructions
1. Combine milk and cream in a large sauce pan. Stir gently over med heat to 185 degrees (nearly boiling).
2. Remove from heat and let cool to 110 degrees (stirring occasionally to prevent skin from forming on surface.)
3. Stir in yogurt culture
4. Transfer to yogurt maker or place sauce pan in oven and let sit for approx 12 hrs (or overnight).
5. Remove and store in refrigerator until you are ready to drip it.

Dripping (the secret to greek-style yogurt):
1. Layer cheesecloth (one layer is fine) into colander or strainer and set into large pan.
2. Transfer yogurt into cheesecloth and let drip for 2-4 hrs. The liquid (whey) will flow into the large pan leaving a firmer yogurt in the cheesecloth. The longer the drip, the firmer the yogurt.
3. Using a large spoon, scrape yogurt from the cheesecloth into a gl***** jar or other container for storage.
4. Keep refrigerated for up to 1-2 weeks.

Makes approximately 1 quart dripped yogurt, or 16 quarter-cup servings.
PCF Ratio: 5-7-88
Calories: 125 Protein: 2g Carbs: 2g Fat: 12g

Also, here's a tutorial I found on youtube. I use a yogurt maker, but as you can see, it's not necessary.
How to make Greek Yogurt

Finally, a few tips:
1. For a lower fat version, simply change the proportions of cream/milk. For a smaller recipe, simply use 1/2 the amount of ingredients.
2. If possible, try to avoid ultra-pasteurized products. They don't culture as easily. I found a local farm that delivers my milk/cream. They use organic practices (though not certified org) and they charge $3.50 per qt/cream! If you live in MA, or even NE, please PM me and I'll try to help you to locate a dairy source.

WEll, Colby's dietician from M*****GEneral sent us an email with his daily allowances. Seems like an awful lot for a 4 year old!
Calories: 1400
Carbs: 40-60g
Protein: 85-95g
Fat 90-100g
That is all we got. She said now we just use the appropriate foods and do our best to stick to these guidelines. WE are so on our own, this is really scarey. Thank the good lord I have jjbeck and the rest of you here bc I don't know how else I am going to do this. Each time I go to the store more ?s come up, more unknowns!!

How close to you all get to the exact? Do most of you still track daily or do you ever get to the point where you don't need to?

So, we are looking for vitamins and supplements right now and I have already prepared him, but I was not giving him enough the past weekend and he was refusing to eat and ended up with a seizure cycle of TC because of it. So, I really have to watch. The last few days he has done really well, and he likes Fage yogurt with raspberries and a little agave! Its so thick but he ate it right up!

Well, here's hoping this works and becomes our silver bullet. I know it will be my friend but right now its hard to see that:)_
