2005 Kids Speak Up! Participant Biography
Colin Bush
Age: 15
Grade: 9
St. Louis, Mo.
Colin Bush began experiencing seizures as a toddler. Over the years, Colin has experienced difficulty at school both socially and academically due to his condition, which also includes language impairment, dyspraxia and cerebral palsy.
As a person with epilepsy, Colin recognizes that despite his challenges he has a role to play in eliminating stigma and helping to find a cure. In recent years, Colin has become a powerful advocate for his cause, writing letters to television networks, radio stations and even car dealerships in response to advertisements or comments he felt to be derogatory to those with epilepsy. In addition, Colin met with Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan shortly before the Governor's death to talk about epilepsy research, funding and education.
As an advocate for the 2005 Kids Speak Up! program, Colin aims to increase understanding that people with epilepsy are just like everybody else and that they should not be treated any differently due to their condition. Colin aims to advocate that people with epilepsy do not opt to have their condition and often must work harder to achieve certain tasks.
