Age: 12
Grade: 7
Traverse City, Mich.

When Andrew Butler was diagnosed with epilepsy, his family knew nothing about the condition. Today, nearly two years later, Andrew's parents not only consider themselves to be experts on epilepsy, but have also become leaders within their community. They have started a support group for parents of children with epilepsy and deliver regular "Seizure Smart" presentations within their community. Andrew's parents also work to spread understanding about the emotional and financial challenges facing families of children with epilepsy. Due to their own difficulties in finding supportive and sympathetic employers, Andrew's parents continue to promote better employment policies for parents in similar situations.

Over the two years since his diagnosis, Andrew has experienced discrimination and bullying from his peers and is eager to speak out against such unfair treatment. As an advocate in the 2005 Kids Speak Up! program, Andrew aims to increase understanding that children with epilepsy are not different from their peers. They can ride bikes, swim and do the same things other children can do. Andrew also hopes to educate his teachers and classmates about epilepsy and how to respond when a person is having a seizure.
