2005 Kids Speak Up! Participant Biography
Emily Price
Age: 12
Grade: 7
Owensboro, Ky.
Emily Price was diagnosed with epilepsy in March 2000. Last year, her physicians recommended Emily be taken out of school and remain at home until they could identify the right medication to help control her seizures.
Luckily, Emily has had the drive, stamina and positive attitude to handle the difficulties associated with her seizures. Whenever she feels frustrated by her condition, she remembers the importance of picking herself up and continuing to do the best she can.
Emily has worked very hard to manage her condition, and is now able to return to her classes and everyday activities. Although there are still times that Emily is unable to write in school due to her hand tremors – she also has experienced great success, such as her recent placement on her school's cheerleading squad.
Emily's goal as an advocate in the 2005 Kids Speak Up! program is to spread awareness of epilepsy. She also plans to share the message that people can contribute to making life easier by allowing children with epilepsy more time to complete tasks and letting them take part in everything other people enjoy. Emily aims to advocate that people with epilepsy have not chosen their condition and that their seizures do not define who they are as people.
