Kids Speak Up! logoBriana Tate

Age: 11
Grade: 6
Brentwood, Tennessee

Briana is an outgoing girl who enjoys ballet, singing in the church choir and being a puppeteer. She had her first seizure when she was 6 months old. Since her seizures were infrequent, her parents initially opted not to use medication to control them.

In 1998, Briana experienced a series of seizures during a kindergarten play. One of her teachers knew seizure first aid and monitored Briana until the ambulance arrived. Today, Briana's seizures are mostly controlled, and she only has two or three per year.

Briana advocates for epilepsy awareness in schools to increase sensitivity for seizure disorders. She wants to make sure that children with epilepsy are treated the same as other kids.
