Claire Anise Real

Age: 16
Grade: 10
Market: Kerrville, Texas

Claire Real Having tried dozens of different medications as well as a VNS implant and the ketogenic diet, Claire Anise Real is finally down to several seizures per day, as opposed to the hundreds she used to experience. With the help of a modified Atkins diet, her seizures are under control —and now she is an A and B student. She is a passionate and outspoken young woman who is determined to speak out about epilepsy. She is a strong advocate in her own community, educating her friends and teachers about the special needs of those with the condition.

She and her entire family have emerged even stronger than before. For instance, her siblings have become compassionate people who will stick up for others who are teased and pray for those in need.

“I would like other people to know that kids with epilepsy participate in activities that normal kids do, such as playing sports or instruments, collecting coins, rocks or stamps, and other academic activities,” Claire said. “And that sometimes doctors put us on so much medication we don’t seem as smart and intelligent as we really are.”
