As part of the Epilepsy Month 2004 Entitled to Respect Initiative, which aims to raise awareness about epilepsy among youth age 10 to 18, reduce the stigma associated with the disorder and encourage respect for young people with epilepsy, the Epilepsy Foundation and its affiliates sponsored the Get the WORD Out! contest.

Entrants submitted songs, spoken word, drawings, paintings, poems and essays illustrating what "respect" means to them. Affiliates selected local winners in two age categories, 10 to 13 and 14 to 18, and two national winners were chosen from these entries. The following are some of the outstanding entries received from around the country.
