25 mg and 50 mg Dosage Options Provide Improved Patient Management

In January 2004, Elan Pharmaceuticals, Inc., announced two new lower bioequivalent dosage strengths of Zonegran® (zonisamide) - 25 mg and 50 mg - in addition to the original 100 mg capsule. Zonegran is indicated as adjunctive therapy for the treatment of partial seizures in adults with epilepsy.

The 25 mg and 50 mg capsules of Zonegran were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in August 2003, and are now manufactured by Elan. All three strengths of Zonegran are now available by physician prescription through retail and hospital pharmacies.

These more flexible dosing options offer physicians greater flexibility to help patients effectively manage their seizures. Neurologists' requests to improve patient management in part prompted seeking FDA approval for lowering the dosing.
