Entitled to Respect: How to Help

If a friend with epilepsy falls down and begins to shake during a seizure, you can help:

    • Stay calm
    • Move things out of the way
    • Put something soft under their head
    • Loosen anything tight around their neck
    • Turn them gently to one side
    • Don't put anything in their mouth
    • Don't try to hold them down

If a friend has a seizure that looks like blank staring, loss of awareness, blinking, chewing, or other movements, you can help by:

    • Staying calm and reassuring
    • Guiding them away from danger or standing in front of anything hazardous
    • Not trying to grab hold of them
    • Staying nearby until they are fully aware again

Should you call an ambulance when someone has a seizure? You may need to if there are injuries, if the seizure lasts longer than five minutes, or if another seizure begins soon after the first. Usually, a seizure ends naturally by itself.
