Bioequivalence: demonstration that both the rate and extent of absorption of the active ingredient of the generic drug fall within established parameters when compared to that of the reference listed drug.

Bioavailability: the amount of a drug in a capsule or tablet that is actually metabolized.

Blood level monitoring: monitoring of levels of antiepileptic drugs in the bloodstream. Blood samples are taken to ensure that a proper amount of the drug is being metabolized.

Breakthrough seizures: seizures that occur unexpectedly while on drug therapy.

Compliance: Refers to patient following physician directions for taking antiepileptic drugs.

Generic drug: identical, or bioequivalent to a brand name drug in dosage form, safety, strength, route of administration, quality, performance characteristics and intended use.

Pharmacotherapy: medication therapy.

Polytherapy: (syn.: polypharmacy) the use of two or more antiepileptic medications for control of seizures.
