Newport Foundation Continuing Support of Epilepsy Foundation Will Enhance Long Term Research for People Living with Epilepsy

The Newport Foundation has continued their decade-long support of the Epilepsy Foundation by giving a $250K contribution toward new and innovative epilepsy research and therapies.

"Jacalyn and William Moyer, and the Newport Foundation, have a strong and long-lasting commitment to helping make a real difference in the lives of people with epilepsy," said Philip M. Gattone, President and CEO of the Epilepsy Foundation and the father of a child with epilepsy. "The Newport Foundation is setting a great example for the overall community to help change lives. Although we have made great research strides toward understanding epilepsy, at least one-third of people living with the condition still have uncontrollable seizures, and many more have less than optimal seizure control or unacceptable side effects. More research funding is needed."

During its existence, the Epilepsy Foundation has dedicated $50M to research and therapies, including providing initial grants to many of the top epilepsy scientists working in the field today.Donations like the one received from the Newport Foundation allow the Foundation to continue to build on a research legacy that will ultimately lead to better treatments and a cure for epilepsy.

SUPPORT EPILEPSY RESEARCH…THE PATH TO CURES

The Epilepsy Foundation is a leader in epilepsy research.  The pace of discovery through research must accelerate.  There are still too many unanswered questions about the causes and most effective treatment for epilepsy.

At the same time the need for transformative research about epilepsy has grown, funding to support it has tightened.   There are fewer government grants, making it more challenging to attract and retain promising scientists in the field.

The Epilepsy Foundation’s 40-yr research program has awarded more than $50 million in grants for epilepsy research, training and fellowships, infrastructure grants, and targeted initiatives.  The Epilepsy Foundation has been at the forefront of supporting epilepsy research, focusing on:

Research with high potential for breakthrough results in treatment, prevention and management.

Increasing the number of qualified scientists conducting epilepsy research.

Investing in targeting research areas not otherwise funded by the government or private industry.

Growing the number of doctors specializing in the care and treatment of epilepsy.

But, the pace must accelerate.  We invite, welcome, and strongly encourage your participation in the fight.  Your support will allow researchers to become even more effective and enhance the nurturing experience for all as we search to discover new treatments.
