Letting go. It starts with taking off the training wheels, not holding their hands when they cross the street and not kissing them in front of their friends.

For parents of children with special health concerns, your child's need for independence often counteracts your instincts to protect them. An important place to start letting go is the doctor's office. Many parents remain by their child's side throughout the entire visit. While this is necessary when the child is an infant and toddler, it may be more helpful to the pre-adolescent and teen for the parent to remain in the waiting room during the actual examination process.

Sitting in the waiting room while your child sits on the examining table may be difficult for you, but it can be empowering for your child. His or her increased confidence will benefit the entire family. Sometimes talking to other parents helps.
