2008 Summer Camp ScheduleAcross the country, Epilepsy Foundation summer camps offer kids with epilepsy a chance to spend time with peers and participate in activities such as swimming, water skiing, tubing, canoeing, boating, fishing, arts and crafts, nature appreciation and overnight camping.

But it's not just about a week of fun away from home. A week at camp is often a life changing experience; full of chances to build confidence, independence and a healthy sense of self-worth.

Camp Candlelight/Epilepsy Camp @ Camp ASCCA offers learning opportunities for children and teens 6–18 years of age through participation in activities such as swimming, water skiing, tubing, canoeing, boating, fishing, arts and crafts, nature appreciation and overnight camping.

The camp receives support from Rotary Clubs and grants. A limited number of individual scholarships for campers are available providing the applicant meets established camp criteria and financial need.

Arizona


Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona

Camp Candlelight
June 15 –21

Camp Candlelight is a one-week summer camp experience for children and teens ages 8–15 with epilepsy. Camp Candlelight is held in Arizona’s White Mountains between Payson and Heber.

Campers experience a range of activities including campfires, horseback riding, rock wall climbing, archery, face painting, water day, crafts and nature walks.

While the activities are exciting, Camp Candlelight is also intended to help the children develop self-worth, independence and personal responsibility by providing an educational forum to learn about seizures, medications and socialization and to discuss seizure myths and concerns.

Cost:
The camp fee is $355 and financial assistance is available for qualifying campers based on financial need.

Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California

Camp Coelho
June 15 –20

The Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California is excited to present the 3rd annual Camp Coelho to be held June 15–20, 2008. Camp Coelho, held in the Yosemite Valley, is a 5-night, 6-day adventure for children ages 9–15 with a primary diagnosis of epilepsy.

The camp is staffed by doctors, nurses, Epilepsy Foundation staff and volunteers.

Activities include arts and crafts, swimming, archery and a ropes course. Camp Coelho gives children the opportunity to learn more about their epilepsy and develop self-confidence and independence in a safe environment.

Cost:
The cost is $750. Scholarships are available.

Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County


Camp Quest
July 13 –18

Each year the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County provides a 6-day, 5-night resident summer camp experience for children with epilepsy, ages 8–12.

Camp Quest is held in partnership with the YMCA of San Diego County’s Camp Marston. Our children are integrated into the regular YMCA camping program with other campers, staying in the cabins with children their own age and enjoying all the camping activities provided.

The camp has a registered nurse and volunteers who provide medical oversight and support to our campers with epilepsy.

Camp Marston is located at the 4,300-foot level in the high mountain district of Julian, Calif., in an area of pines and oaks with miles of hiking trails. The facilities include a swimming pool, Lake Jessop, soccer and volleyball fields, basketball court, archery and air-rifle ranges, an outdoor crafts area and a rock climbing tower.

The children participate in activities such as hiking, sports, swimming, boating, crafts, drama, campfires and other fun camping activities.

Cost:
The cost is $25 per child.

Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles

Epilepsy Teen Retreat
June 22–28

Teen Retreat is held at Camp Arrowhead Ranch in Lake Arrowhead, Calif. This is a weeklong residential camp for teens and pre-teens between the ages of 12–20 with epilepsy.

It’s a great opportunity for teens to experience activities like swimming, sports, hiking and a challenge course. All activities are safe and monitored by professional staff. They’re designed to be accessible to campers’ individual needs and abilities.

Cost:
The cost is $500. Scholarships are available for those who qualify.

Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles


Epilepsy Family Camp–Camp Family Fun and Friendship
September 5–7

Family Camp is held at Camp Mt. Crags in the Santa Monica/Malibu Mountains. This is a weekend camp for children with epilepsy and their immediate family members.

It’s a great opportunity for families to interact with each another and experience fun camp activities like swimming, sports, hiking, carnivals and family nights. All activities are safe and monitored by professional staff. They’re designed to be accessible to campers’ individual needs and abilities.

Cost:
The cost, depending on family size, varies from $100–$200. Scholarships are available for those who qualify.

Colorado


BOUNDLESS, an Outward Bound Course for Youth with Epilepsy
July 26-August 1.

Outward Bound is offering a week-long outdoor adventure for young people ages 16 to 25 with epilepsy.

For seven days, you are invited to join a small group of other teens and young adults with epilepsy to explore the spectacular Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

The group will be accompanied by two experienced Outward Bound adventure course leaders throughout the course. In addition, a senior epileptologist will accompany the group on select segments of the program.

You don’t need to have previous backpacking experience—we’ll teach you everything you need to know!

The course will begin at the Leadville Mountain Center with a basic introduction to backcountry travel. Then you’ll journey out into the high country—where the real magic takes place.

The rigor of this Outward Bound adventure will be tailored to the abilities of you and your group.

Limited scholarships may be available for eligible participants. For information on scholarships, please contact shauver@outwardbound.org .

All on-course food, lodging, equipment (camping gear), and transportation is provided by Outward Bound.

You’ll leave the course both physically and mentally stronger. You will conquer new challenges and make new friends. Your group will walk away from this Outward Bound experience with a deeper understanding of life, yourselves and each other.

Not all applicants are eligible to participate. Outward Bound carefully reviews each applicant on an individual basis.

Jason Fleishman Summer Camp
July 27–31

The Jason Fleishman Summer Camp is located at Covenant Heights Camp and Retreat Center in Estes Park, Colo. It is an overnight camp for youth ages 10–17 living with epilepsy.

There will be fun and challenging activities including horseback riding, zip line, arts/crafts, climbing wall, fishing, canoeing, high/low ropes courses, archery and volleyball.

Camp is designed to be a safe experience that will increase self-confidence, independence, self-awareness and provide opportunities for friendship building among young people with epilepsy.

Cost:
The cost is $300. Scholarships are available based on financial need.

Rocky Mountain Village
July 20–25

Rocky Mountain Village camp is located in Empire, Colo., and is an accessible overnight camp for youth ages 6–14 living with epilepsy and other disabilities. It is designed for youth who may need one-on-one assistance due to physical, developmental or behavioral difficulties.

There will be fun and challenging activities including zip line, horseback riding, arts/crafts, music, drama, fishing and outdoor living skills. Camp is designed to be a safe experience that will increase self-confidence and provide opportunities for building friendships amongst youth with epilepsy and other disabilities.

Cost:
The cost is $795 but partial scholarships up to $300 are available based on financial need.

Epilepsy Foundation of Connecticut

Summer Camp for Children & Teens with Epilepsy
July 20–25

The Summer Camp for Children & Teens with Epilepsy is held at Easter Seals Camp Hemlocks in Hebron, Conn., just 25 miles east of Hartford.

Campers ages 8–18 enjoy the same activities as all campers do, including swimming, arts and crafts, drama, sports and many other exciting activities. The camp is surrounded by 160 acres of unspoiled woodland and includes a dining hall, health center, auditorium, indoor heated pool, greenhouse, cabins, arts and crafts center, nature center and a challenge and group initiative course.

Cost:
The cost is $210 per camper plus a $25 non-refundable application fee.

Camp Boggy Creek
August 3–8

Participants enjoy a weeklong summer session of fun, adventure and independence. Camp Boggy Creek is a permanent, year-round facility where children, ages 7–16, with chronic or life-threatening illnesses can come at no charge to them or their families.

The Boggy Campers meet new friends and share their challenges while enjoying swimming, boating, fishing, arts and crafts, horseback riding, theater, archery, singing and dancing. Located in Eustis, Fla., the camp is specifically designed for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses.

Laughter and friendships abound on the 232 acres of tall pines, majestic oaks and nature trails.

Camps are especially suited for children ages 6–18 with epilepsy, as all counselors are trained in seizure recognition/first aid and full-time medical staff is onsite.

Activities include swimming, fishing, various sports, archery, talent shows and arts and crafts.

All water-based activities are on a one-on-one supervision level and flotation devices are required.

Cost:
The cost is $400. Residents of Ga. may qualify for full or partial scholarships available through the epilepsy Foundation of Georgia.

Camp Blackhawk

The Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago’s popular camp for kids ages 6–18 returns.

Camp Blackhawk, located at the Timber Pointe Outdoor Center on Lake Bloomington in Hudson, Ill., is a weeklong overnight camp for children and teenagers with epilepsy.

It’s a great opportunity for kids to experience the fun of camp activities—swimming, fishing, hiking, horseback riding and more—all designed to be accessible and adapted to individual needs and abilities, and all in a safe, medically monitored setting.

Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska


Epilepsy Foundation of North/Central Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska

YMCA of Rock River Valley
June 16–20

The Epilepsy Foundation of North/Central Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska is partnering with the YMCA of Rock River Valley to include children with epilepsy in the Y-s summer day-camp program.

Children ages 4 and 5 are eligible for the 1/2–day program. Children entering grades 1–6 can participate in the full-day program.

We will have a nurse onsite during the week of June 16–20 to handle any seizure emergencies that occur. Campers have the option of choosing another week, but no specialized medical support will be available. However, camp staff will be trained in seizure recognition and first aid, and all campers with epilepsy will participate in the development of a Seizure Action Plan which will be shared with the camp director and appropriate staff.

Financial assistance is available, and campers do not have to live in Rockford to participate.

The Center for Courageous Kids
June 14–19

The Center for Courageous Kids is located in Scottsville, Ky. Courageous Kids is a medical camping facility designed specifically for children ages 7–15 with specific medical needs.

Courageous Kids children enjoy total access to every feature and program of the camp, including horseback riding, bowling, swimming, theatre, woodworking, cooking, arts and crafts, basketball, climbing wall, campfire singalongs, archery and more!

The onsite medical support structure allows the child with special medical needs to fully participate in the camping experience. Parents can be confident their child will receive the special care they need in a safe, specially designed and professionally staffed facility, but where the medical presence is purposely kept in the background.

Cost:
There is no cost for the child attending the week of summer camp.

Camp Shining Stars—Hosted by Med-Camps of Louisiana, Inc.
July 6–11

Camp Shining Stars is a residential overnight camp for children ages 6–16 living with epilepsy.

This camp is hosted by Med-Camps of Louisiana at Camp Alabama. Camp Alabama is a 33-acre wooded paradise located in the piney hills of north-central La.

Facilities include comfortable accommodations, nature trails, a beautiful lake with canoes and paddle boats, and a wheelchair-accessible swimming pool.

All campers participate in traditional activities including horseback riding, hiking, swimming, canoeing, arts and crafts, group games and an end-of-camp dance.

Medical supervision is provided and a residential nursing staff and a pediatric neurologist is available on-call.

Camp Oz is held at YMCA Camp Ihduhapi, located near Loretto, Minn., (25 miles west of the Twin Cities). Camp Oz is a weeklong overnight camp for children and teens ages 8–18, who are affected by epilepsy.

Activities include water-based activities, sports, archery, nature, outdoor cooking, campfires and group initiatives. We also offer an additional horseback-riding camp.

Camp Oz is staffed by a full medical team that is onsite and a group of dedicated volunteers to ensure that each camper has a positive and safe experience.

The Alvin P. Flannes Summer Camp, an overnight camp for kids ages 8–16 with epilepsy, will be held at Camp Wesley Pines in Gallman, Miss.

This full camp experience that includes canoeing, swimming, arts and crafts, rope course, horseback riding, water slide and team games is staffed by Epilepsy Foundation personnel and medical professionals.

Cost:
The camp is offered free of charge to any child in Missississippi with a primary diagnosis of epilepsy.

Camp NOVA

Camp NOVA is a wonderful opportunity for children and young adults living with epilepsy and other developmental disabilities to enjoy summer camp at the fun-filled YMCA Camp Linwood MacDonald in Branchville, N.J.

Camp NOVA, which provides an exciting and independent camping experience in an environment filled with fun experiences and memories that last a lifetime, is a one-week overnight camp for young people, ages 12– 28.

Camp activities include acting, arts and crafts, boating, fishing, karate, swimming and yoga.

Cost:

Mighty Mike Simmel’s Bounce Out the Stigma™ Program offers 3 one-week basketball camps throughout N.J.

Camp EAGR

Camp EAGR is the Epilepsy Foundation of Rochester, Syracuse, Binghamton’s weeklong overnight camp for children and teenagers ages 8–17 with epilepsy.

It is located at the YMCA’s Camp Weona, just outside of Warsaw, N.Y.

It’s a great opportunity for children to participate in activities such as swimming, horseback riding, wall climbing, canoeing and arts and crafts.

Along with approximately 30 qualified counselors, Camp EAGR has a neurologist and three registered nurses who remain at the camp the entire week.

Camp Firebird, where children with epilepsy between the ages of 7–17 have the opportunity to spend a week at an overnight camp, is held in Danville, Ohio.

Activities include horseback riding, canoeing, archery, wall climbing, swimming, outdoor games and arts and crafts. It is a time for kids to have fun, meet new friends and learn more about epilepsy.

Cost:
The cost is $125 for families in Franklin, Licking, Delaware, Knox, Holmes, Coshocton, Muskingum, Fairfield, Pickaway, Madison, Ross and Union; $300 for families out of the service area. Scholarships and sliding fee scales are available for qualified individuals, based on availability and financial need.

Camp Dream Catcher, located at YMCA Camp Kern just outside Cincinnati, offers weekend and weeklong overnight camps for children with epilepsy age 8 and up.

Campers have the opportunity to swim, hike, horseback ride, canoe, fish, rock climb and take part in crafts, play games and much more. While having a great time outdoors, campers are also given the chance to learn about their seizures, gain valuable coping skills and make friends with others who share a common diagnosis.

Epilepsy Foundation Western/Central Pennsylvania

Camp Frog
June 22 –28, Camp Conrad Weiser
July 6 –12, Camp Fitch

Camp Frog is a weeklong, residential program that places extra supportive and medical services into existing YMCA summer camp programs, allowing children who have a primary diagnosis of epilepsy to enjoy summer camp just like their peers.

It is offered at two different locations:

  • Camp Fitch in North Springfield, Pa.
  • Camp Conrad Weiser in Wernersville, Pa.
Both camps offer a wide range of activities for children and teens ages 8–17, including archery, horseback riding, climbing towers, arts and crafts, fishing, outdoor games, swimming and camp fires.

A pediatric neurologist and nurse, along with trained counselors, are onsite during the entire week of camp.

Cost:
The cost is $435–$575. Financial assistance is available through the Steve “Froggy” Morris/G. Peter Rockwell Endowment Fund.

Camp Achieve at Camp Green Lane
August 16 –22

Camp Achieve, located in Montgomery, Pa., is a weeklong overnight camp for children and teens with a primary diagnosis of epilepsy/seizure disorder.

Separate activities for the 8 –12 age group and the 13 –17 age group include low ropes course, climbing wall, swimming, canoeing, arts and crafts, jam sessions, guest speakers, entertainers, tennis, Frisbee golf and basketball in a safe and medically monitored setting.

Young adults 18 and older with primary diagnosis of epilepsy/seizure disorder are encouraged to apply for volunteer Junior Counselor (orientation is on the evening of Friday, August 15). Application does not guarantee a spot. Camp fee is waived. Campers and Junior Counselors must be able to perform activities of daily living independently. Application materials must be returned no later than two weeks prior to camp; physician input is required.

Cost:
The cost is $250 ($350 fee is subsidized), and qualified participants may apply for financial assistance.

Camp River Run
June 8–13

Camp River Run is a weeklong residential summer camp for children with epilepsy ages 7–14.

The children can enjoy an exciting summer experience, meet other children with epilepsy and interact and share feelings with one another at no cost.

Trained medical personnel and counselors are provided.

The camp is free of charge.

Kamp Kaleidoscope

August 17–22

Kamp Kaleidoscope is a weeklong, residential summer camping program for teenagers with a primary diagnosis of epilepsy. Campers must be between 15–19 and have been on an antiepileptic therapy within the last 12 months.

The camp offers teens a unique camping experience while surrounded by a caring and well-trained staff.

A pediatric neurologist and a team of nurses will be onsite for the week of camp.

Activities include ROPES course, swimming, soccer, basketball and much more. Camp is provided free of charge to all campers.

Camp Spike ‘n’ Wave
June 15 –21

Camp Spike ‘n’ Wave® is a weeklong, residential camping program for children between the ages of 8–14 with a primary diagnosis of epilepsy. Campers must also be on some form of antiepileptic therapy during camp.

Pediatric neurologist Dr. Gary Clark and his staff of nurses will be onsite to administer medication and answer any questions campers may have.

Campers participate in activities such as ROPES course, horseback riding, canoeing, archery, arts and crafts, swimming and fishing. Campers also enjoy night games, water day games, a dance and just hanging out!

Cost:
Camp is provided free of charge to all campers.

Virginia


Epilepsy Foundation of Virginia

Epilepsy Camp at 4H Camp in Jamestown, Va.
July 14–18

The Epilepsy Foundation of Virginia is partnering with the 4H of Virginia to create a fun-filled week of overnight camping for boys and girls, ages 9 –13, at a beautiful location right on the James River next to historic Jamestown.

The camp days will be filled with activities that include a large variety of activities like swimming, boating, rope courses and hiking. The Epilepsy Foundation will provide extra staff to an already well-run program for additional support.

Space is limited and registration has started.

Cost
:
Families are expected to pay the deposit of $50; the remaining funds are paid through scholarships.

Epilepsy Foundation Northwest

Camp Discovery
August 24–27

Camp Discovery will be held at YMCA Camp Coleman, in Longbranch, Wash., near Gig Harbor.

It provides opportunities for children and teens ages 7–17 with epilepsy from Wash. and Ore.—and their siblings—to take part in camp activities in a safe environment.

Registration begins May 1, 2008. Registration forms are available on our Web site www.epilepsynw.org.

Cost:
There is no cost for children with epilepsy; camperships will be available for siblings. The cost for one-on-one attendant is $125.

Camp Phoenix
July 20–25

Children ages 8–17 with a primary diagnosis of epilepsy are invited to attend Camp Phoenix, which is held at Wisconsin Lions Camp in Rosholt, Wis.

Our children are integrated with children with other medial conditions.

A nursing staff is onsite 24 hours a day and Epilepsy Foundation staff are available for extra support when needed.

Cost:
The cost is $600. Each affiliate solicits donations from their community in order to offer scholarships.

Adult Retreat at Wisconsin Lions Camp, Rosholt, Wis.
August 22–August 24

The Adult Retreat, located at the Wisconsin Lions Camp in Rosholt, Wis., is a 3-day, 2-night camp for adults with epilepsy.

It’s a great opportunity for adults to experience the fun of camp activities—like swimming, fishing, sports, hiking and more— all in a safe setting and designed to be accessible and adapted to campers’ individual needs and abilities.

Cost:
The cost is $150. Scholarships may be available for qualified individuals, based on availability and financial need.
