WEI Educational Forums

The WEI educational forums, held throughout the country during Epilepsy Awareness Month, will increase public knowledge and community awareness about issues facing women with epilepsy. Women with epilepsy, their friends and families, and epilepsy professionals will engage in a day of discussing key issues like parenting, mood disorders and depression, pregnancy, AEDs and more.

Women & Epilepsy Initiative

More than one million women and girls in the United States are living with seizure disorders. They face many unique challenges, from changes during the monthly cycle which may trigger seizures to concerns regarding pregnancy. Social factors leave them vulnerable to discrimination and abuse. Yet their plight and the manner in which they are affected has been largely ignored. As an important part of the Epilepsy Foundation's role in advocating for all people with epilepsy, we are committed to addressing the unique health concerns of women with epilepsy.

The Women and Epilepsy Initiative is a campaign to bring hope and help to women with epilepsy. The project is divided into separate but complementary initiatives to break down community and institutional barriers.

Call to Action for All Women on Anticonvulsant Medication

Women of childbearing age who take anticonvulsant medications for conditions that include epilepsy, migraine headaches, and certain psychiatric disorders, are urged to talk to their healthcare providers about treatment options. The Call to Action was created by the Epilepsy Foundation in cooperation with medical experts and representatives from leading medical professional and voluntary health organizations.
