Kid and Teen Services
Teens and kids with epilepsy currently face a variety of problems, ranging from being bullied at school to being excluded from groups to having other teens actually thinking their condition is contagious! To help out, the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago has created the following programs:
- Teen Activity Clubs and Discussion Groups: The Foundation's activity clubs let teens with epilepsy and their friends (kids without epilepsy ARE welcome) to get together, get out and have fun. Hang out and talk about stuff that matters, take fieldtrips to Chicago area fun spots (Cubs Games, ice skating, movies)... If you want to get involved with one of these groups, call (312) 939-8622.
- Teen Website: EntitledtoRespect.org has games, chat rooms, "shout-out" message boards, and well... all kinds of stuff.
- Camp Blackhawk: Want to get out of the city for awhile? Or if you live in the country, hang out with a couple dozen new friends? Do things like ride horses and play sports and shoot arrows and...
Well, Camp Blackhawk is a great for kids and teens ages 8 - 16. From July 27 - August 1, 2008, have some fun this summer, and get out to Blackhawk. For more information, call Meredith at (312) 939-8622.
- Parent Support Groups: For parents of children with epilepsy who are struggling with their child's condition and are interested in receiving support and information from peers and professions in attendance, our support groups are open to anyone with a child who has epilepsy.
- School Alert: The Foundation is available to visit elementary schools, middle and high schools, offering training to teachers, nurses, social workers, bus drivers, or any other school personnel. Classroom presentations are available to groups or individuals to aid a child's integration. For more information, contact Linda Brinker.
- I.E.P. (Individual Education Plan) Training: Parents of kids with epilepsy get help negotiating an appropriate individualized educational plan with their school. Our licensed professionals are available for assistance in preparing, planning, and negotiating a successful I.E.P. meeting.
