This seminar is designed for professionals who will be working in some capacity with individuals suffering from anxiety. It designed to educate the participant about how to understand anxiety and the ways in which anxiety reduction (avoidance) tends to establish symptoms. Treatment strategies follow directly from this kind of conceptualization. Treatment becomes more complicated if a history of trauma is involved and clearly requires resolving the trauma. Participants will learn relaxation techniques and other strategies used in treatment. Participants will leave this seminar with a better understanding of anxiety and how to help those suffering from the disorder. About the speaker: Don Beere, Ph.D.; ABPP Dr. Beere has over 35 years experience as a general practitioner and currently practices in Florence, Kentucky. For 29 years, he was a full-time, tenured faculty in the Psychology Department at Central Michigan University and Director of Clinical Training of the Department’s accredited doctoral program in clinical psychology. He is a facilitator and certified therapist and consultant in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Dr. Beere was on the Executive Committee of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISST-D) from 1999-2002. He is one of 23 mental health professionals world-side selected by ISST-D to teach a course on Psychotherapy of the Complex Dissociative Disorders and is one of 2 individuals who pilot tested the advanced course during 2004-2005. In 2007, ISST-D gave him the Distinguished Achievement Award. Dr. Beere is an artist, author of a yet-to-be published novel, Tai Chi teacher and certified Tai Chi for Arthritis instructor. Dr. Beere has also specialized various meditation and relaxation techniques useful to reduce stress and anxiety. He has authored and co-authored many chapters in books and psychology journals. Objectives By attending this seminar, participants will be able to: 1. Understand how anxiety is conceptualized by psychologists; 2. Understand how anxiety gets translated into various disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorders, phobias, hypochondriasis and obsessive-compulsive disorder; 3. Provide an overview of intervention strategies; 4. Provide a brief exposure to relaxation techniques. |
