Epilepsy Facts & FiguresThe Team S.P.E.E.D. (Special Persons Ending Epilepsy Disorders) Program was created to provide awareness to the growing population of persons living with and affected by epilepsy. Presently, epilepsy affects nearly 3 MILLION Americans. It is the 3rd most common neurological disorder in adults, and the most common in children. More people are diagnosed with epilepsy than with muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, and alzheimer’s disease COMBINED! Statistics show that 1 in 10 people will have a seizure in their lifetime, and 1 in 100 will develop epilepsy. The Epilepsy Foundation National Office and its affiliates are dedicated to helping people with epilepsy break down the barriers associated with this condition and to support research, towards finding a permanent cure. The Foundation’s programs, services, and support for research, help to promote a better quality of life for people with epilepsy. Locally epilepsy affects more than 120,000 individuals in the 79 counties of Central & South Texas served by the Epilepsy Foundation Central & South Texas (EFCST). The Foundation is the place people turn to first when they learn that they or a loved one is affected by epilepsy. EFCST provides Information and Referral, Seizure Clinics, Employment Assistance, Family Support Services, Community and Professional Education, and Advocacy. |
