Professional Inservice Education

teaching a classDesigned for school teachers, bus drivers, social workers, nurses, case managers, law enforcement personnel and employers, this program teaches professionals how to recognize and provide appropriate first aid for seizures. It also addresses the host of psychological, learning and social problems that come with epilepsy. Taught to hundreds of professionals annually, this program can be tailored to a range of audiences. Teachers and other staff play an especially critical role in the school experience of children with epilepsy. Classroom personnel are often the first to notice the signs and symptoms of a seizure disorder. They are in a unique position to observe the progress of treatment, and to identify and address the behavioral and learning issues that effect some children with seizures.

The inservice program includes a video, handouts for future reference and information on the following:

  • Description
  • Classification and Recognition of Seizures
  • Incidence and Causes
  • Observation and Documentation
  • First Aid Skills
  • Tests and Treatments for Epilepsy
  • Psychosocial and Educational Issues
  • Talking with students who have observed a seizure
  • Programs and Services of Epilepsy Foundation.

The program is presented by a Nurse Educator, who is available to answer specific questions as well. Please allow about an hour for the presentation. A $75 fee is requested to cover the expenses associated with the program. If funds are not available for the purpose, the fee will be waived.
