Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan

Programs and Services

The Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan is dedicated to empowering individuals with seizure management tools. We invite you to take a look at how our programs and services demonstrate that commitment.

Education and Consultation Services
If you have questions about epilepsy, we can help. Simply call our toll-free number, (800) 377-6226, or send an e-mail, and a knowledgable Education Specialist will provide the answers and assistance you need. You can also arrange to meet with an Education Specialist at our Southfield or Grand Rapids office.

Epilepsy Library
For those who prefer to get their information through independent study, our Epilepsy Library is a great resource. Whether you're looking for inspirational stories, detailed medical information, or tips on coping with epilepsy, you can find what you need in the Epilepsy Library's books, videos, and pamphlets.

Free School Programs
A supportive school environment is essential in promoting health, safety, and school success among children with epilepsy. To help create such an environment, the Foundation offers three FREE epilepsy awareness programs for students and educators. Find out more.

Seizure Smart
In addition to teaching seizure recognition and first aid to school personnel, we offer tailored versions of the Seizure Smart program to a number of other audiences, including police & security personnel, nursing home staff, home health care workers, group home and adult day care staff, assisted living facilities, employers, vocational rehab counselors, child day care centers, college dormitories, and others. For more information, please contact the Director of Education (ext. 302).

Living Well with Epilepsy
Living Well workshops are designed to inform and empower people with epilepsy and their families. They provide information on epilepsy-related topics and an opportunity to discuss these topics with others who are experiencing similar challenges. Workshops include the following: "Taking Charge of Epilepsy," "Depression & Epilepsy," "Stress Management," "Employment & Epilepsy," "Depression in Children with Epilepsy", and "Epilepsy & School Performance." Many of these workshops are offered at our Epilepsy Today Conferences or at Support Group meetings (view a list of upcoming workshops). Workshops can also be scheduled for audiences of ten or more people upon request. For more information, please contact the Director of Education (ext. 302).

Camp Discovery
Camp Discovery provides children with epilepsy an opportunity to attend a 5-day/ 4-night camp with other children. Epilepsy education and awareness is incorporated into the camping experience. Camp counselors are trained in seizure recognition and first aid, and there is a 24-hour infirmary. The cost of camp is $500 per child, but please know that limited financial assistance is available. To learn more about Camp Discovery or to download camp forms, visit our Camp Discovery page.

Weekend Retreats
For many people, managing epilepsy involves much more than just managing seizures. Epilepsy can impact school performance, employment, relationships with family and friends, and much more. To help address some of these issues, Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan offers weekend retreats for people with epilepsy and their families.

The retreats use a variety of psychoeducational activities to help participants assess individual and family strengths, identify available resources, set goals, and identify and address barriers to achieving these goals. Participants learn from others faced with similar situations and get a valuable opportunity to set aside other concerns in order to focus on the challenges posed by epilepsy.

Mark your calendar for the following retreats:

To find out more about these retreats, contact our Health Educator at 800-377-6226 option 1, ext. 231 or send an e-mail.

Support Programs
While the information and support provided by caring health professionals, human service workers, and friends is helpful, people tell us that talking to other individuals and families with epilepsy provides the strength and reassurance that they most need. Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan offers three ways to meet this need: Support Groups, Epilepsy Entertainment Gatherings (the EEG program), and our Peer to Peer Support Network.

One of our newest programs is "Teen to Teen" - a social support group for teens with epilepsy (ages 13-19).  For more information, call us at 1-800-377-6226 ext. 1-234 or download the flyer.

To be connected with a Peer Support Provider, please call our main office at (800) 377-6226. To learn more about becoming a Peer Support Provider or starting a support group, call Mia Cooke at (616) 454-7979 or send an e-mail.

Advocacy Programs
Advocacy programs help to preserve the rights of people with epilepsy and their families. To learn about The Epilepsy Action Network, the Annual Legislative Breakfast, and other efforts, please go to the Advocacy page.

Winning Kids
The "Winning Kids" program recognizes the accomplishments of children with epilepsy, who have overcome tremendous challenges in their lives. This program helps youth to demonstrate their courage and winning spirit and increase their self-esteem as they tell their stories. All participants are honored and have the opportunity to represent the Foundation at events throughout the year. To learn more about this program, please contact (800) 377-6226 ext. 1-204 or send an e-mail. Meet our 2007 Winning Kids.
