Education & Support GroupsEducation and Support Groups are held that meet the needs of specific populations. E-mail us or call us at (937) 233-250 or (800) 360-3296. Recreation & Socialization Group We provide a recreation and socialization group for those with uncontrolled seizures. For people whose seizures have not been controlled by any treatment, access to the community and to recreational type activities can be very limited. This group allows for social interaction and friendships to develop. The group meets the3rd Thursday of each month,from10:00am-2:00pm,occasionally at different venues in the community. Men and Epilepsy Support Group This ongoing group meets the 1st Thursday of each month from 6:30-8:00 pm. Newcomers are always welcome. Parent Information Group: For parents and caregivers, this group will meet the 3th Tuesday of the month during the Young Adult Group.To register for this group, please call the office at 937-233-2500or800-360-3296. Sorry, but no child care is available for additional children. Our Parent Information Group will provide an opportunity for parents and caregivers to gain information about important issues they face with their child. Topics will vary, but at times will coincide with the Youth Group issues. Topics for discussion include but are not limited to: -First Aid for Seizures -Learning Disabilities that affect children with seizures -Understanding laws for educating those with disabilities -Understanding Multi-Factored Evaluations -How to get your school district to educate your child -Available resources in the Miami Valley for children and families of children with epilepsy -How to help a child that is being bullied -How relationships are affected by epilepsy The Parent Information Group will be facilitated by Betty Cornwell, a Special Education Advocate who has served families in the Miami Valley Area for the past 19 years. She also raised 2 children with epilepsy and learning disabilities, who have both graduated from college. She is eager to share her knowledge with you to help you make informed decisions in raising your child with epilepsy. Young Adult Group: For ages 19-29, this group will meet the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 6:00-7:30 pm in the Huber Heights office. This group will provide an opportunity to discuss issues of concern to young adults living with seizures. This is a time where young adults are starting to gain their independence, enter college, find jobs, live on their own and manage their own lives. For some, if their seizures are uncontrolled, it can be a very disappointing and challenging time. This group will offer time to share information and resources, celebrate successes, discuss frustrations, and talk about living life with a seizure disorder. Topics include but are not limited to: -Seizure First Aid and Epilepsy Treatment -College or Job Training Options -Employment Issues-do I tell my employer I have epilepsy? -Transportation Options -Relationship building-dating, maintaining friendships -Finances -Any other topics the group decides to discuss |
