Project Access

Phase I

HRSA Project Access  - Phase 1 2004-2007

Project Access began as a three-year effort involving state agencies, physicians and other health care providers, families, schools, and community resources to achieve early detection, treatment, and seizure control for children and youth residing in medically underserved areas. If successful, the activities conducted under this initiative will spread to other communities across the United States, providing broader, national significance.

The eight demonstration states were selected based upon several factors. First, all of these states have communities federally designated as medically underserved. Second, these states had a combination of children and youth with epilepsy who reside in rural and/or urban communities with limited resources. Third, these states conducted preliminary needs assessments to begin to uncover the extent of epilepsy in their regions. Lastly, these states had evidence of existing epilepsy activities. The states and organizations who participated in Project Access Phase I are:

  • California: Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles
  • Illinois: Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago
  • Mississippi: Epilepsy Foundation of Mississippi
  • New Jersey: Epilepsy Foundation of New Jersey
  • Oregon: Easter Seals Oregon
  • Washington, D.C.: District of Columbia Department of Health
  • West Virginia: West Virginia University Center of Excellence in Disabilities
  • Wisconsin: Medical College of Wisconsin
