J Kiffin Penry Patient Travel Assistance Fund

The J. Kiffin Penry Patient Travel Assistance Fund provides reimbursement of travel expenses for eligible patients and their families.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Travel more than 50 miles to receive FDA-approved medical care and/or treatment for epilepsy/a seizure disorder.
  • Demonstrate financial need based on individual income tax return and evidence of financial hardship.
  • Provide clear justification for obtaining medical treatment/services more than 50 miles from the patient's home.

NOTE:
Applicants may apply for pre-approval prior to travel. Original receipts are required with the final application in order to receive travel reimbursement.

About the Application Review Process:
An impartial review committee is set up to review each request for travel assistance. This committee consists of an Epilepsy Foundation national office staff member, an Epilepsy Foundation national Board Member, and an Epilepsy Foundation affiliate representative. Each application is reviewed carefully. In making a final decision, reviewers look at the application's completeness, whether eligibility requirements are met and whether all required documentation is provided. Decisions are made within 10 business days.

About J.Kiffin Penry
The J. Kiffin Penry Patient Travel Assistance Fund was established in honor of J. Kiffin Penry, a physician who died in 1996, and is considered one of the most influential epilepsy leaders of his generation. Dr. Penry became a professor at Bowman Gray School of Medicine following a distinguished career at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). He served for a number of years on the Epilepsy Foundation's Professional Advisory Board (PAB) and National Board of Directors.
