Defining Epilepsy
Epilepsy has been in the news this past weekend, after Kelly Osborne had a seizure on the set of her television show. We send our best wishes to Kelly and the entire Osborne family as doctors work up a diagnosis.
An estimated 1 in 100 people in the United States has had a single unprovoked seizure. Epilepsy is broadly defined as the occurrence of two or more unprovoked seizures separated by at least 24 hours. Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder in the United States after Migraine, stroke, and Alzheimer's disease. One in 26 Americans will develop epilepsy during their lifetime.
